Since I never give anything five stars, I automatically clicked on the fourth star when I started this review. Then I tried to think of something I didn't like about this movie, and couldn't. I finally clicked on that fifth star.

I love Robert Carlyle, and will watch anything he plays a part in. I also love Ray Winstone and Philip Davis. This move is chock full of terrific British actors. The pacing is marvelous, with lots of action and nail-biting tension, building to a stunning confrontation between Winstone and Carlyle. And Philip Davis does a fabulous job of portraying a desperate man driven to an insane outburst; his acting in that scene alone makes this movie worth watching.

The characters are realistic, three dimensional and imperfect. If you're the sort who loves the flawless knight in shining armor, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you're looking for a true-to-life adventure then you'll find it here. Yes, the plot is sometimes brutal, but it's this rawness which makes the story so realistic. No, it's not exactly a 'feel-good' movie, but that only makes it seem even more plausible.

Director Antonia Bird is excellent at weaving the hero's brief flashbacks into the tale, and Robert Carlyle portrays a disillusioned man, struggling to deal with the cognitive dissonance between his current life and his poorly buried past ideals, with his usual understated brilliance.

For an American viewer, the one flaw was the lack of subtitles. I watch a lot of British t.v. and movies, and I've got a pretty good ear for British accents, but there were a few times when I had a bit of trouble understanding the actors' lines.

Still, the movie itself is well worth watching. If you're into truly absorbing drama, great acting and directing, and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then you'll enjoy "Face".

4.0 out of 5 starsThe Falklands War: a visual Diary.
5 February 2017
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I well remember the controversy when it was announced that Linda Kitson was to be the official war artist for the Falklands Campaign.

This large-format paperback presents a sizeable selection of her sketchbook drawings which capture a range of the activities and day-to-day detail of the lives of those soldiers who took part in operations during the war.
These are not “finished” drawings, rather this is drawing as reportage – direct, spare and immediate – drawings to catch the moment without elaboration or even the possible distraction of colour. Mainly contour line drawings with only subtle hints of shading in some cases, they are nevertheless accurately observed; “visual diary” is a very appropriate term for the images presented.
Each drawing is accompanied by a descriptive text provided by Kitson.

A fascinating book, no doubt of interest to more than just those who draw or are interested in art/illustration as it is an important historical documentation of the conflict.

World War I, the Depression and World War II, these are just a few major events that have changed, and indeed challenged, family life in Britain dramatically. Take for instance a girl born in the early part of the 20th century, she had little chance of eluding the role that was considered her destiny - to marry young, stay at home to look after her husband and raise a family. What would have once threatened a family's respectability in the early 1900s, today seem almost commonplace, for example - abortion, contraception, the single parent family or even gay relationships. This book takes an in-depth look at how families coped, and with the aid of fascinating photographs we can take a nostalgic walk back in time.

On June 23, 1950, a DC-4 with 58 souls on board flew from New York toward Minnesota. Minutes after midnight Captain Robert Lind requested a lower altitude as he began crossing the lake, but Air Traffic Control could not comply. That was the last communication with Northwest Airlines Flight 2501. The Navy and Coast Guard never located the wreck, rendering it impossible to determine a cause for this tragic accident.

Fatal Flight brings vividly to life the year of operation of R.101, the last great British airship—a luxury liner three and a half times the length of a 747 jet, with a spacious lounge, a dining room that seated fifty, glass-walled promenade decks, and a smoking room. The British expected R.101 to spearhead a fleet of imperial airships that would dominate the skies as British naval ships, a century earlier, had ruled the seas. The dream ended when, on its demonstration flight to India, R.101 crashed in France, tragically killing nearly all aboard. Combining meticulous research with superb storytelling, Fatal Flight guides us from the moment the great airship emerged from its giant shed—nearly the largest building in the British Empire—to soar on its first flight, to its last fateful voyage. The full story behind R.101 shows that, although it was a failure, it was nevertheless a supremely imaginative human creation. The technical achievement of creating R.101 reveals the beauty, majesty, and, of course, the sorrow of the human experience. The narrative follows First Officer Noel Atherstone and his crew from the ship’s first test flight in 1929 to its fiery crash on October 5, 1930. It reveals in graphic detail the heroic actions of Atherstone as he battled tremendous obstacles. He fought political pressures to hurry the ship into the air, fended off Britain’s most feted airship pilot, who used his influence to take command of the ship and nearly crashed it, and, a scant two months before departing for India, guided the rebuilding of the ship to correct its faulty design. After this tragic accident, Britain abandoned airships, but R.101 flew again, its scrap melted down and sold to the Zeppelin Company, who used it to create LZ 129, an airship even more mighty than R.101—and better known as the Hindenburg. Set against the backdrop of the British Empire at the height of its power in the early twentieth century, Fatal Flight portrays an extraordinary age in technology, fueled by humankind’s obsession with flight.

Tempe Brennan, Kathy Reichs' forensic anthropologist heroine, often finds herself in physical jeopardy. In "Fatal Voyage", her fourth outing, someone is trying to kill her and also to destroy her professional reputation with trumped-up charges of unethical behaviour.
Tempe is called in when a plane full of college athletes goes down in the remoter parts of the forests of North Carolina. She finds herself investigating a spare foot she rescued from coyotes, a foot which is significantly more decomposed than the crash victims and which has symptoms of gout, a disease most of the dead young people had no time to contract. There is a locked house and walled courtyard out in the woods that do not appear on any maps and it seems almost as if her simple knowledge of their being there has offended the powerful of the world.
As always, Kathy Reichs manages to combine a detailed knowledge of who the dead were and how they died with a profound sense of the sadness of things. This is a book that never lets us forget amid the dissections and tests for genetic markers that each human death is that of a tragic and irreplaceable human being. Tempe is one of the more attractive of the current crop of women detectives simply because she is flawed and vulnerable as well as smart, righteous and brave. Reichs never lets you forget that crime novels should acquaint us with good people as well as human evil. --"Roz Kaveney"

When a plane crashes high in the mountains of North Carolina, Tempe Brennan is one of the first on the scene. As a forensic anthropologist for the state, she serves on the region's disaster response team. The task that confronts her is a sad and sickening one. Putting normal life on hold, she and her colleagues must painstakingly identify the victims. A chance discovery concerns her: a severed foot, well away from the main crash site. A deserted house close by is buried so deep in the woods that locals claim to know nothing of its existence. And her examination of the foot throws up more questions than it answers. Before she can make any progress, an anonymous accusation is levelled against her. Tempe must fight to save her professional standing. But she fears that, air tragedy aside, another corpse lies somewhere in the woods. Pitting herself against a conspiracy of silence, Tempe is determined to bring justice for her mystery victim...

Father Frank Browne became famous in the wake of the Titanic disaster when his photographs, the only ones of the ship in sail, were published by newspapers all over the world. This new collection of Browne's photographs brings together a huge store of images of the great liners of the first half of the twentieth century with the lesser working vessels, such as ferries, mailboats, and tugs, and the people who worked and traveled on them.

In 1912, Father Frank Browne SJ disembarked from the Titanic in Cork Harbour with the largest extant collection o pictures taken on board the ship during her maiden voyage. Some of these photographs of the liner and her passengers appeared on the front pages of the world's newspapers reporting the sinking of the ship a few days later, with the loss of over 1,500 lives. This volume relates the story of Father Browne's Titanic voyage, illustrated by photographs and memorabilia from his personal album - an invaluable archival treasure. The facsimile reproductions from that album, together with additional photographs, piece together the story of the great ship's voyage from Southampton up to her departure from Queenstown, her final port of call before disaster struck. Father Browne's first-hand account of his journey is included, along with some intriguing letters, such as correspondence from teh White Star Line and from fellow passengers. His poem, 'In Moriam', a menu card, telegrams, and press cuttings add further interest. The Foreword is by Dr Robert D Ballard, who discovered the wreck of the Titanic in its resting place in the depths of the ocean.

Felixstowe owes its existence to the 19th-century fashion for seaside holidays when the gentry and businessmen chose to build their summer residences in the parishes of Walton and Felixstowe. In earlier centuries Walton had been the more significant settlement, with a manor and a castle. Even the later fort guarding the Suffolk side of Harwich harbour was often considered to be part of Essex. When the Dutch landed on the Common in 1667 and were defeated by Landguard Fort's garrison, all England heard of the place and King Charles II himself paid them a visit.

In 1963, a schoolboy browsing in his local library stumbled across a great mathematical problem: Fermat's Last Theorem, a puzzle that every child can now understand, but which has baffled mathematicians for over 300 years. Aged just ten, Andrew Wiles dreamed he would crack it. Many people had tried before Wiles and failed, including an 18th-century philanderer who was killed in a duel. An 18th-century Frenchwoman made a major breakthrough in solving the riddle, but she had to attend maths lectures at the Ecole Polytechnique disguised as a man. This is the story of the puzzle that has confounded mathematicians since the 17th century. The solution of the Theorem is one of the most important mathematical developments of the 20th century.

From the Back Cover
'I have discovered a truly marvellous proof, which this margin is too narrow to contain…'

With these tantalising words the seventeenth-century French mathematician Pierre de Fermat threw down the gauntlet to future generations. Fermat's last theorem looked simple enough for a child to solve, yet the finest mathematical minds would be baffled by the search for the proof.

Over three hundred and fifty years were to pass before a mild-mannered Englishman finally cracked the mystery in 1995. Fermat by then was far more than a theorem . Whole lives had been devoted to the quest for a solution. There was Sophie Germain, who had to take on the identity of a man to conduct research in a field forbidden to females. The dashing Evariste Galois scribbled down the results of his research deep into the night before sauntering out to die in a duel. The Japanese genius Yutaka Taniuama killed himself in despair, while the German industrialist Paul Wolfskehl claimed Fermat had saved him from suicide.

Andrew Wiles had dreamed of proving Fermat ever since he first read about the theorem as a boy of ten in his local library. Whilst the hopes of others had been dashed, his dream was destined to come true – but only after years of toil and frustration, of exhilarating breakthrough and crashing disappointment. The true story of how mathematics' most challenging problem was made to yield up its secrets is a thrilling tale of endurance, ingenuity and inspiration.

The File: a Personal History A journalist renowned for his coverage of the downfall of communism in Eastern Europe produces a gripping personal account of state surveillance and individual betrayal in Cold War Germany. Full description

‘An invaluable document for our time, bravely and beautifully written; a chilling portrait of treachery and compromise and an unsolved human riddle that will not let me go.’ John le Carré

‘By far the wisest and most penetrating study of a communist "informer society" ever written by an outsider.’ Neal Ascherson, Independent on Sunday

In 1992, after the Berlin Wall came down, Timothy Garton Ash walked into the ministry which now looks after the records of the Stasi, the East German secret police, and asked if there was a file on him. There was – one marked ‘Romeo’. The File is the story of what was in the buff-coloured binder, and of the avenues – personal, political and historical – down which Garton Ash was led by it.

‘The File is history on the hoof: part reportage, part memoir, often crafted more like a novel than a piece of non-fiction. It is about "the quieter corruption of mature totalitarianism", about official record versus personal memory… Garton Ash knows exactly which buttons to press for our illumination.’ JULIAN BARNES, Sunday Times

‘Excellent and fascinating… An inspiring book.’ PHILIP HENSHER, Mail on Sunday

‘A masterpiece… It has found its place on that small shelf of books I would want to rescue if my house went up in flames.’ Paul OESTREICHER, Tablet

‘Real life Le Carré.’ Jeremy Paxman, Sunday Times Summer Reading

Sixty years ago, Europe lay at the feet of Adolf Hitler. In a series of whirlwind campaigns between September 1939 and June 1940, Germany defeated Poland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and France. It had signed a treaty with the Soviet Union, driven the British Expeditionary Force off the continent of Europe at Dunkirk, and stood poised to invade Great Britain, the only remaining belligerent. Standing between Hitler and world domination was the just-elected prime minister, Winston Churchill...and a few thousand pilots in the Royal Air Force's Fighter Command. Defeat seemed inevitable. instead, a legend was born. Taking its readers on a breathtaking journey from open lifeboats in North Atlantic gales to the cockpits of burning fighter planes, Finest Hour recreates the tensions and uncertainties of the events of 1940 -- months when the fate of the world truly did hang in the balance. It is a powerful account, told through the voices, diaries, letters, and memoirs of the men and women who lived and loved, fought and died during that terrible yet ultimately triumphant year. The personal stories of these soldiers and airmen, diplomats and politicians, journalists and spies are combined with a fresh and often controversial account of the swirling political intrigues and betrayals of the period. Here are President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy; journalists Edward R. Murrow and Whitelaw Reid; Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King and French Premier Paul Reynaud. Here are the Royal Navy's assault on the French fleet, the hushed-up catastrophe of the SS Lancastria, America's secret plans to cope with the expected defeat of Britain, and Winston Churchill's indomitable determination to bring the New World to the rescue of the Old. A testament to a year when a nation's darkest hour became its finest, a work that blends original historical research with the experiences of ordinary people living in desperate times, Finest Hour is a singular achievement, an indispensable contribution to the literature of World War II

On September 7, 1940, the Blitz began. The strategic bombing of London, by over one thousand planes on that night alone, was recognised at the time as being a direct measure to break the country's resistance, 'softening' Britain's shores for the planned Operation Sealion. This book describes the impact that this terror had on the British people.

A groundbreaking history of the first, horrific day of one of the most notorious, bloody offensives of all time, from its inept planning to its disastrous execution. It took several million bullets and roughly half an hour to destroy General Sir Douglas Haig's grand plans for the first day of the Somme, 1 July 1916. By day's end 19,240 British soldiers were dead, crumpled khaki bundles scattered across pasture studded with the scarlet of poppies and smouldering shell holes. A further 35,493 were wounded. This single sunny day remains Britain's worst-ever military disaster, both numerically and statistically more deadly than the infamous charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854. Responsible were hundreds of German machineguns and artillery batteries waiting silently to deal death to the long-anticipated attack. Someone had blundered. Working back from the "butcher's bill" of mass casualties on the battlefield, to the inept planning in London's Whitehall, the author penetrates the "fog of war" to explain how and why this was a human disaster waiting to happen. Told fully from both the British and German perspectives for the first time, this book sheets home blame for the butchery (a total of almost 60 thousand casualties) directly to widespread British intelligence and command failure. It further finds the outcome was very definitely a German victory over a so-called British defeat, and, again for the first time, identifies how talented German commanders mostly outclassed their opposite numbers and inflicted the galling bloodletting. Taking that terrible first day of battle as his focus, Andrew Macdonald casts new and damning light on the true causes of the disaster. Published in time for the hundredth anniversary commemoration of the Battle of the Somme in July 2016, this is a major contribution to World War I history and an epic story of courage, misery and endurance in its own right.

After an immense but useless bombardment, at 7.30 am. On 1 July 1916 the British Army went over the top and attacked the German trenches. It was the first day of the battle of the Somme, and on that day the British suffered nearly 60,000 casualties, two for every yard of their front. With more than fifty times the daily losses at El Alamein and fifteen times the British casualties on D-day, 1 July 1916 was the blackest day in the history of the British Army. But, more than that, as Lloyd George recognised, it was a watershed in the history of the First World War. The Army that attacked on that day was the volunteer Army that had answered Kitchener's call. It had gone into action confident of a decisive victory. But by sunset on the first day on the Somme, no one could any longer think of a war that might be won. Martin Middlebrook's research has covered not just official and regimental histories and tours of the battlefields, but interviews with hundreds of survivors, both British and German. As to the action itself, he conveys the overall strategic view and the terrifying reality that it was for front-line soldiers.

September 11, 2001, did not represent the first aerial assault against the American mainland. The first came on July 17,1996, with the downing of TWA Flight 800. This book looks in detail at what people saw and heard on this fateful night.

First Strike explains how a determined corps of ordinary citizens worked to reveal the compromise and corruption that tainted the federal investigation. With an impressive array of facts, Jack Cashill and James Sanders show the relationship between events in July 1996 and September 2001 and proclaim how and why the American government has attempted to cover up the truth.

I loved The First Wives Club years ago when it first came out and I still love it. I had some rare downtime over the weekend and decided to watch this movie again. I sat down and watched it like I'd never seen it before. This movie is still a delight and I loved it from beginning to end. This is one of those movies that will make you laugh, cry, get angry and be happy. I loved that the friendship between Bette, Goldie and Dianne re-kindled, even though it was due to a tragic reason. These three women are so different from each other, but they had a special bond that didn't diminish due to the time that had passed. I hate that Cynthia didn't reach out to her friends before doing the unthinkable - but it was sweet that she mailed each of them a letter before to prove that they were always on her mind. This definitely got me to thinking about my friendship than span over 40 years - Friends forever!

I especially loved the song and dance at the end of the movie - I watched them sashay all the way down that street. Awesome movie!

Flashes in the Night captures the tragic story of the sinking of M/S Estonia in dark, cold Baltic waters on September 28, 1994. Caught in a storm during an overnight trip between Tallinn, Estonia, and Stockholm, Sweden, the ship sank in a matter of minutes. Debate continues over whether the cause was structural or sabotage, but the fact remains 852 souls were lost at sea in Europe's worst civilian disaster. Nearly one-third of those who escaped the ship died of hypothermia. A twenty-nine-year-old Swedish entrepreneur and a pretty nineteen-year-old Swedish girl are a major focus of this dramatic account. On that night when Kent Harstedt met Sara Hedrenius on the top rail of the sinking ship, they made a date for dinner in Stockholm-if they survived. Through that endless darkness, huddled in near-freezing water in their raft, they told each other jokes to stay awake and alive. Their date made world headlines. This is their story, and the story of the young British adventurer Paul Barney, along with riveting accounts of others who were a part of this harrowing life-or-death survival epic.

A collection of 60 ships that made the Cunard name so famous from Samuel Cunards first commission to build a safe and comfortable boat in Britannia, to the worlds largest passenger vessel, Queen Mary 2. Commissioned illustrations, new research and unique photographs tell the story of Cunard's greatest liners. Whether its heart break or heroism, drama or dreams, each liner has a story to tell.

From the Publisher
This is the third book in the successful series exploring Cunard's heritage and history. The Fleet 1840 - 2004 follows on from Queen Mary 2, Book of Comparisons and Stars Aboard and takes an informative look at Cunard's greatest liners.

Written by renowned historical author and researcher Elspeth Wills, The Fleet 1840 - 2004 captures the character of the ships, as much of her new research is based on interviews with crew members or sourcing archive diaries and accounts of time on board the ship. It gives the book a personable feel as different eras of ocean travel are explored and explained.

Between the two World Wars, the Royal Navy's carriers were provided with aircraft flown by flights and later squadrons of what was then the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force. In addition, many battleships and cruisers were provided in the thirties with an aircraft or two fitted with floats and launched from catapults. The service was never very large, and it was not until May 1939 that the Admiralty gained full control over it.

This 48-page softback contains 98 well-captioned photographs illustrating the aircraft and carriers then in use. Tables list all the relevant units, and there are side-view drawings of the main types of aircraft flown with some information on colour schemes.

"Swissair 1-1-1 is declaring Pan Pan Pan. We have smoke in the cockpit." Seventeen minutes after the co-pilot's distress call, the Geneva-bound jet crashed into the Atlantic off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia just over an hour after leaving New York on September 2, 1998, killing all 229 people on board.

Now, a year later, acclaimed journalist Stephen Kimber tells the moving story of the crash and its far-reaching human consequences. Kimber introduces us to a wide variety of people: from the victims and their families to the recovery teams, pathologists and investigators who are still searching for answers. As with any disaster, the effects are unpredictable and heartwrenching. In a fast-paced and compelling style, Flight 111 traces  the interconnected paths of the people whose fates were forever altered by what happened that night.

On January 15, 2009, a US Airways Airbus A320 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport in New York, when a flock of Canada geese collided with it, destroying both of its engines. Over the next three minutes, the plane's pilot Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger, managed to glide to a safe landing in the Hudson River. It was an instant media sensation, the "The Miracle on the Hudson", and Captain Sully was the hero. But, how much of the success of this dramatic landing can actually be credited to the genius of the pilot? To what extent is the "Miracle on the Hudson" the result of extraordinary - but not widely known, and in some cases quite controversial - advances in aviation and computer technology over the last twenty years?

From the testing laboratories where engineers struggle to build a jet engine that can systematically resist bird attacks, through the creation of the A320 in France, to the political and social forces that have sought to minimize the impact of the revolutionary fly-by-wire technology, William Langewiesche assembles the untold stories necessary to truly understand "The Miracle on the Hudson", and makes us question our assumptions about human beings in modern aviation.

During the night of 27th April 1944, Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for the D-day landings, took place off the coast of Devon. This supposedly routine exercise experienced a series of fatal blunders that allowed German E boats to intercept the convoy of landing craft. By dawn, nearly 1000 American servicemen, many young and untrained, had lost their lives. This story explains how and why the tragedy happened, and explores the elaborate cover-up that later took place. It is also the tale of one man's obsession to honour the memory of those Americans who died so needlessly.
-
On April 28, 1944, a rehearsal for the D-Day landings off England's Devon coast went terribly wrong. A series of blunders allowed German E-boats to intercept the convoy of landing ships, and 946 Americans—many of them young and untrained—lost their lives. Yet until the publication of The Forgotten Dead, the true scale of this tragedy had never before come to light. This is the story of one man and his obsession to honor the memory of the 946 American soldiers who died needlessly that night. In the early 1970s, Ken Small, a hotelier, began beachcombing along Slapton Sands, near his hotel. He soon discovered unexpended bullets, U.S. dollars, and the personal possessions of U.S. servicemen. Gradually, he pieced together the events of that night and began the struggle to erect a memorial to honor the dead soldiers. This is the story of how he fought governments on both sides of the Atlantic to uncover the truth.

Over four years, four ships were lost under different circumstances and 4,000 lives with them ― but one thing linked them all: it was John Charles Bigham, Lord Mersey, who was appointed to head the inquiries into each disaster. Mersey is oftern referred to as a ‘company man’, or a government stooge. But is this the whole truth?
Everyone has heard of Titanic and Lusitania but more passengers died when the Empress of Ireland sank in May 1914. That inquiry turned into a head-to-head between an American lawyer and a British one. Did Mersey let the right man win? Was he fair to Captain Lord of the Californian when he blamed him for the loss of so many lives on Titanic? The U-Boat that sank the Falaba with the loss of 104 lives behaved very differently to the one that torpedoed the Lusitania just six weeks later. Did Mersey reflect that in his findings or was he more interested in propaganda than truth?

For the guided-missile destroyer HMS Coventry, war began in earnest on 1 May. On 25th May, Coventry was attacked by two Argentine Skyhawks, and hit by three bombs, which killed 19 of her crew and many others injured, including her Captain, David Hart Dyke. This is David's story.
——-
In March 1982 the guided-missile destroyer HMS Coventry was one of a small squadron of ships on exercise off Gibraltar. By the end of April that year she was sailing south in the vanguard of the Task Force towards the Falklands. As diplomacy failed, crisis became conflict. By the time the ship left Ascension Island, its company knew war was inevitable - a war in which they would be in the front line.

For Coventry, the war began in earnest on 1 May. Her job was to be 'on picket' to the north west of the islands. She was to provide early warning of approaching enemy aircraft from the west, and fend off any incoming threat to the highly valuable ships and aircraft behind her. On 25 May, Coventry was attacked by two Argentine Skyhawks, and hit by three bombs. The explosions tore out most of her port side and killed 19 of the crew, leaving many others injured - mostly by burns. Within twenty minutes she had capsized, and was to sink early the next day. In her final moments, when all those not killed by the explosions had been evacuated from the ship, her Captain, David Hart Dyke, himself badly burned, climbed down her starboard side and into a life-raft. This is his compelling and moving story.

It has never been disputed that, in April 1956, Commander "Buster" Crabb OBE GM RN went diving in Portsmouth Harbour beneath the Soviet Warship "Ordzhonikidze" and never returned. Ten days later he was reported dead by the British Admiralty - who denied all knowledge of any task he might have been undertaking. Fourteen months later a mutilated, decomposed and unidentifiable body was recovered from the sea and accepted as being that of Crabb.

This book, claims that Crabb did not die but was captured by the Russians and secretly taken to Moscow in a drugged state and later went on to become a serving officer in the Soviet Navy where he taught the latest diving techniques - all of which occurred with the full knowledge and connivance of the British Government.

As a professional Royal Navy Diver in a relatively junior rank (equivalent Lt Colonel), Commander Crabb would not have had access to the sort of secrets which would have interested the Soviets in 1956. The very notion that the Soviets should collude with the British government in an elaborate plan whereby all parties (i.e. the British, the Soviets, Crabb and his diving support staff) should embark on an operation where a twice-decorated Naval Commander should be deliberately sent under a Soviet warship with the intention that he should be captured in order to be spirited away to Moscow so that he might teach diving in the Soviet Navy is farcical in the extreme. Even the so-called documents which purport to support the author's contention could have been typed anywhere.

Even as far back in 1956 when the free world was frightened of growing Soviet nuclear power, Britain would have openly assisted the Soviet Union with matters as relatively mundane as professional "Navy" Diving in a show of peace and unity and all that.

This book belongs in the realms of fiction and should not be taken seriously.

The Frogmen is the thrilling story of some of the bravest men produced by the Second World War, who worked alone under water. Some clad in fantastic rubber suits with webbed feeet, walked or crawled on the muddy bottoms of harbours, looking for mines: some bestrode torpedoes and fixed mines to the hull of enemy ships: some slipped through the black waters in midget submarines. The Italians were the first to use frogmen and two-man torpedoes, operating against British ships at Gibralter and Alexandria. British counter-measures were immediately started, and the great possibilites of the new form of warfare were fully realised. Illustrated with B/W photos

A powerful survivor's account of the IRA bomb that killed the author's 14-year-old twin brother, his grandparents and a family friend and was published on the 30th anniversary of the atrocity.

On the August bank holiday weekend in the UK in 1979, 14-year-old Timothy Knatchbull went out on a boat trip off the shore of Mullaghmore in County Sligo, Ireland. It was a trip that would cost four lives -- and change his own for ever.

The IRA bomb that exploded in their boat killed Knatchbull's grandfather Lord Mountbatten (cousin of the Queen), his grandmother Lady Brabourne, his twin brother Nicholas, and local teenager Paul Maxwell. In telling this story for the first time, Knatchbull is not only revisiting the terrible events he and his family lived through, but also writing an intensely personal account of human triumph over tragedy.

For thirty years, Knatchbull has lived with the echoes of that day: the death of the twin from whom he had been inseparable; the loss of his adored grandparents, whose funerals along with his twin's he and his parents were too injured to attend; the recovery from physical wounds; and the emotional legacy that proved harder to endure.

In From A Clear Blue Sky Timothy Knatchbull delves into his past, present and future, and reveals a story of courage and fortitude as he, his family, and their English and Irish friends dealt with the shocking assassinations and their aftermath. Taking place in Ireland at the height of the Troubles, it gives a compelling insight into that period of Irish history. But more importantly it brings home that although tragedy can strike at any moment, the human spirit is able to recover and evolve over time.

This book about truth and reconciliation, unflinching in its detail, asks searching questions about why human beings inflict misery on others, and holds lessons about how we can learn to forgive, to heal and to move on. It will resonate with readers the world over.

Colin Wilson believes that thousands of years before ancient Egypt and Greece became powerful, there was a great civilization whose ships travelled the world. Whereas we have no way of viewing the universe as a whole, these "old ones" possessed a knowledge system that offered a unified view of the universe, which was then passed on to descendants who escaped to Egypt and South America. It was this knowledge system - alien to modern man - that enabled them to move stones weighing a thousand tons. In this exploration of the remote depths of history, Wilson sets out to reconstruct that ancient knowledge. He attempts to understand how the long-forgotten people thought, felt and communicated on a universal plane.

Robert Royan joined the maritime training ship HMS Conway in 1944 at the start of a career in the Merchant Navy which was to last forty-six years. During that time he was to witness the build- up of the UK merchant fleet after the war and also the end of this sea-going era during as British crews faded away and the fleet increasingly operated under flags of convenience. We follow the young Robert Royan s two-year training course and early voyages as a cadet and trace his career through the ranks until he obtained a ship as master in 1970. His long service with Clan Line and its connections was recognised in 1988 when he was appointed Commodore. There were few ports of distinction at which the author did not dock during his career and his descriptions of visiting them make absorbing reading. The tension in Calcutta on the day Ghandi was assassinated was especially memorable as was having to deliver a ship to the breaker s yard on a beach in India. From small cargo ships to cruise liners, and the biggest container ship of the time, Robert Royan s deft handling of both vessel and crew illustrates what life at sea is all about. It is an account which brings back many memories to those familiar with the sea.

Step aboard the most beautiful cruise ships, from the 1930s to present day! Discover life aboard as well as numerous mythical ports of call, from the Caribbean to the Far East... It was in 1891 that Albert Balin, director of the Hamburg American Line, invented a travel concept that would soon enjoy world-wide success: the pleasure cruise... Largely democratized since the days of the first floating palaces of the 1930s, the cruise ship has become a veritable village resort, entirely conceived and designed for the pleasure of its passengers. The activities and festivities held aboard have become equally important as the excursions planned at port. Amply illustrated with archival and contemporary photos - largely unpublished - including archival documents, passenger travel diaries, and richly captioned brochures and posters, Full Steam Ahead takes the reader on a gloriously nostalgic journey aboard the first frail pleasure steamers to the largest cruise liners of all time - visiting (or revisiting) numerous legendary ports of call along the way, divided geographically: the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Great North and Poles, Latin America, East and South Africa, as well as the Far East. This hardback book has 192 pages and measures: 31.5 x 24.5 x 2.5cm
